Choristas  Creating!
May 23, 2018
Here's a recording of Carrboristas creating melodies for the lines of two ancient sea poems.
The poems are posted below. We mixed up the lines, singing from both poems
whichever way we were drawn to sing. The improvisors are, in this order,
Kathleen, Margie, Bernadette, Susie, Clare, Ann,
I  love listening to your creativity in mixing up the lyrics,
and your lovely and sometimes humorous melodies and rhythms!

And here are Durham Choristas creating melodies for lines from the same two poems.  The improvisors were sitting in a circle in this order: Kathleen, Joanne, Mary, Lorraine, Meggan, Debbie, Koren, Jennifer, Margie, Jane, Cyndy, Kirsten. (A couple of people passed once each, so it's a little mystery...see if you can recognize the voices!)
Untitled Shaman Song
by Uvavnuk (Iglulik Eskimo woman, 19th century)
translated by Jane Hirshfield

The great sea
frees me, moves me,
as a strong river carries a weed.

Earth and her strong winds
move me, take me away,

and my soul is swept up in joy.

Night Ocean
by Rumi
We are the night ocean filled

with glints of light
We are the space
between the fish and the moon
while we sit here together
