Songs for Our Journey 25

I wrote this song many years ago, and we usually sing it in Bodies, Voices & Spirit Chorus  just one night of the year. After seeing daffodils and trout lillies blooming on Tuesday, I knew this is the week to sing it! One thing I love about this song is that people tend to want to dance while they're singing it. Imagine a room full of the Faerie people flitting about, and you'll see what I saw the past couple of nights as the Choristas celebrated this moment out of time.
Just Beyond The Winter
© K Hannan

Midnight on the meadow, the sky is almost blue
Full moonlight seeps into my soul, and makes all old things new
The dogs howl at the magic, a thousand peepers sing, and it's
Just beyond the winter, and just before the spring

Just beyond the winter
Just before the spring
Just beyond the winter
And just before the spring

The juniper stands dark and true, and I need such a friend
'Cause I have been so ragged, alone and lost again
And I've been racing forward, to lose my fear somewhere
To try to leave something behind, to find something that's not there

Just beyond the winter
Just before the spring
It's just beyond the winter
And just before the spring

But there's nowhere to run to, with the Moon so fierce and bright
She pours her love on meadow grass, and serenades my night
She says, "Leave your many thousand things, rest here on the hill
And sing my song, believe my song
Be still..... be still....... be still

Just beyond the winter
Just before the spring
It's just beyond the winter
And just before the spring
Just beyond the winter
And just before the spring!

Rain Prayer

This song started with a melody line that my dear and long-time friend Lyndsay Hester played on her fiddle one evening when we were jamming with friends.  I had recorded the evening on a cassette tape, and later, listening to it, I fell in love with one of her melody lines, and wrote what is now the soprano line as a counterpoint to her first fiddle melody. Later I realized that if two people sang it we could have lyrics for both parts.

I've been singing this for many years now, and it has had many many iterations. The Bodies, Voices & Spirit Chorus sang it at my CD release concert in 2013 and blew everyone away. Unfortunately the recording of that didn't turn out too well due to the very loud heat/cool system, but the chorus' voices shine in my memory.

Some recordings of the song that did turn out well are below.

The first is a home recording of me with Lyndsay Hester on fiddle, Jude Casseday on drum and me on piano and both vocals.  This is the original key we played it in.

The second is a concert with Sheila Fleming singing it with me at Unity Center of Peace in Chapel Hill.

The third is my 2018 CD sung by friends and members of Bodies, Voices & Spirit Chorus.

And the fourth sound file below is a 2017 recording by the band
Kiva, from Washington, D.C., on their album Odds & Ends.
It's sung by Ariana and Tigre, and I love how their voices
sound together on this song.

I hope you will enjoy the recordings, and please sing along!
Rain Prayer

With every step I took, I knew I knew you
In every drop of rain, I knew I knew you
They say it's you who always stays
It's me who falls away
Oh show me how, I'll come back now
This is all I pray

Took a walk, in the rain, and for a while
I knew you
In every drop, I heard your voice, just for a while
I knew you
They say it's you, who always stays
It's me who falls away
Oh show me how, I'll come back now
This is all, this is all
This is all I pray
