Late August in Maine is bittersweet.  The warm days are gorgeous, but so fleeting! I wrote this fiddle tune a number of years ago, wanting to express the feeling of this sacred moment of beauty balanced on the very edge of the end of summer. You can download the sheet music below the sailboat.

Thank you so much for this! I’m sitting on my sailboat , it was the perfect accompaniment to this moment.

Hi Joanne,
Thanks so much for listening to this tune, and for writing to me. I love knowing that you heard it on your sailboat! Last light of August blessings and early September blessings to you!

This piece is just so lovely. It truly evokes those bittersweet feelings that the end of summer brings - a sense of loss of one season mixed with sweet anticipation of the next. It is indeed a sacred and liminal space. I could feel it in my bones as I listened. Thank you!

Thanks so much Marilyn, for listening to the tune, and for your lovely and evocative writing about the passageway from late summer to early autumn. I wrote that tune many years ago, and no matter what time of year I listen to this recording the poignancy of late August in Maine flows through me just as it did when the tune was born and when Loell and I made that recording a few days later. Blessings to you as summer transforms herself into fall.

The word "stirring" comes to mind on hearing this melody! Wow- I wish I could replicate, but afraid ukulele would not do it justice. Loved it, thanks for sharing!

HI Cathy,
It's so good to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoyed the tune, and I think it would be fun to hear it on ukelele. But to make it work, it really needs some instrument, like the piano, to play the bass line so you can feel the syncopation of the melody. But if you figure out the melody on the uke, come over to chorus on a Thursday night and we can play it together before chorus starts! Love to you, Kathleen
